The action between USS Constitution' and HMS Guerriere off Nova Scotia 19th Aug 1812
About 400 miles east of Nova Scotia, the US heavy frigate Constitution’ sighted HMS Guerriere’. Constitution, being 'to windward', closed, shortening sail and prepared for action.
'HMS Guerriere’, recognising the US ship, 'hove to' and fired the first broadside which fell short. The two ships started to exchange broadsides at very close range and it was not long before USS Constitution's heavier guns proved fatal. Firstly, Guerriere’s mizzen mast fell overboard and overpowered the rudder causing the ship to foul the mizzen rigging of Constitution. Shortly after both of Guerrieres’s remaining masts fell. Lacking any manoeuvrability she was unable to avoid Constitution’s continuing broadsides which quickly reduced the British ship to a wreck. Firing a cannon away from Constitution, she then struck her colours. After taking off the crew, Gurerriere was set ablaze and she blew up and sank.
