Sunset over San Francisco, as the Star of Holland, one of the Alaska Packers fleet, comes home. Cutting across her wake is the Sausalito ferry James M. Donahue, of the San Francisco and North Pacific Railway Company. The prominent building on Telegraph Hill is the so-called German Castle, a dubious establishment which burned down not long after the time of this scene.
The Star of Holland was one of many British-built square-riggers in the Alaska Packers’ fleet. She was built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast, as the Brocklebank Line’s Zemindar, before going on to serve other owners as the Otto Gildemeister and then Homeward Bound before her final change of name.
