The Porthmadog-built topsail schooner M.A. JAMES in the North Atlantic..

The M.A. JAMES was built by David Williams in 1900, one of several fine schooners built at Porthmadog around the early 20th century.  She was 124 gross tons and had a long career, eventually breaking up in 1950. 

In this painting, she is depicted making good way in a fresh breeze after a gale during the night.  With this fair wind, her crew hopes to fetch landfall and Bishop Rock light by evening, later setting topsails and jibs as the wind moderates.
