The American yacht Vigilant racing the Britannia

The two famous yachts settled for a private match in August 1894.  The VIGILANT was a popular visitor from America and often raced here, but this time against the equally famous Prince of Wales's cutter, the BRITANNIA, which enjoyed a long racing career.  Here both yachts are beating to windward on the breezy day, and although the painting depicts the British yacht ahead, the Vigilant eventually won this race by 4 minutes and 20 seconds.
