Built in Bath Maine in 1853, The Down East was owned by WR Grace, an Irish emigrant to America via Lima Peru who eventually became mayor of New York.
The vessel carried a valuable cargo of guano from Peru to New York for many years, and was the forerunner of the Grace Line Shipping Company that still trades today.
