Launched in November 1869 by Scott & Linton of Dumbarton for John Willis, the Cutty Sark represented the ultimate development of the fast tea clipper. In fact she was of such a high standard that she bankrupted the builders and had to be towed across the river to Greenock to be rigged.
Here she is on a winter day taking advantage of a favourable breeze to sail down river over the tide.
Original oil on canvas
Canvas size 36 x 48 inches, signed lower right.
In a fine 4-inch gilt frame.
