The Centurion is the ship Lord Anson used on his circumnavigation of the world. His instructions were to `damage Spanish interest in the Pacific`. This image depicts the engagement on June 20th 1743 when HMS Centurion captured Spanish Galleon `Nuestra Senora de Covadonga` after an intense battle. Together with a very valuable cargo of specie, she was also carrying over 1.3million `pieces of eight`. The prize money made Commodore Anson a very rich man and the value of the coinage added greatly to the general wealth of England.
