Here is a scene from the 1890s. The little 71-ton Schooner is the Elbridge Gerry, built at Danversport, Mass. in 1857 is running SW from Maine to New York and passing an outward bound four-masted barque.
Traffic heading NE from New York or Delaware Bay would pass to the south of Montauk point which is on the eastern end of Long Island.
This painting was shown at the 2008 International Marine Art Exhibition at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, USA.
