"A scene from Patrick O'Brian's first Aubrey / Maturin book,  Master and Commander. Jack Aubrey's 14-gun brig  Sophie sights the much larger and better-armed Spanish 32-gun xebec-frigate Cacafuego through the lifting mist.

Captain Aubrey is still keeping his options open to deceive the enemy until the last minute, so the brig is not carrying a naval pennant but has just hoisted (or just struck) the American flag which is visible under the gaff boom." - Geoff Hunt
