This painting shows the yachts soon after the start of the third race, when Shamrock held the lead, the only time indeed that Sir Thomas Lipton’s yacht was in such a position in the entire seven-race series.

Soon after, Sir Thomas, on his motor yacht Erin, pictured LHS, watched as Shamrock’s main halyard parted in increasingly difficult seas, and her sail crumpled onto the deck. Race over.

Enterprise completed a 4-0 series victory.
