The French ketch MUTINE was launched in 1928 in Brittany as a tunny fishing vessel. Later during WW11, she was used by the British for 'special operations' and was based in Helford River, Cornwall. In 1941 she was attacked by German aircraft off the Lizard but survived, although a crew member was killed. The vessel had an adventurous career after that, including a spell in the Mediterranean. Later the MUTINE became a training ship for French navy cadets, and the artist was privileged with a visit aboard when she was used as such, depicted here manned by trainees and officers.
