This composition shows a barque emerging from a haze of mist, alongside a smaller vessel. The composition embodies an eerie sense of calm, a dense mist engulfing the frame. A soft glow radiates from the centre-point, its reflections dancing on the water’s surface. Montague Dawson was fascinated by the towering grace of 19th Century sailing vessels, which inspired a lifelong career in marine painting. He once said: "My painting gives me a tremendous sense of exhilaration, almost as if I am there on the ship itself. You have to get life into a marine painting to make a ship move through the water, be lifted by the waves’.
