First published by Frost & Reed in 1935, this dramatic painting by Montague Dawson shows the leaders of a race in a yachting regatta. Depicted “neck and neck” on a windy day, the other competitors trail behind the two leaders in the distance. Although traditionally known for his paintings of clipper ships, Dawson painted many marine subjects including yachts. This painting is typical of the artist’s style: striking white sails, clouds, and a choppy sea.
