Tahiti, one of the lovliest of South Pacific islands, was “discovered” by the Cornishman Samuel Wallis, Captain of HMS Dolphin, on August 18, 1767. The Dolphin was on a voyage of circumnavigation, sent by the Admiralty to search for an alleged Southern Continent thought to lie in the unexplored waters west of Cape Horn. Although the supposed continent remained elusive, Tahiti became a favoured spot for replenishment for South Pacific voyagers from Cook and Bougainville to the present day.
