This painting eloquently illustrates the changing face of maritime commerce in the early 20th Century.  A steam coaster is chugging her way down Channel outbound, while a gamely topsail schooner with a fair sou-westerly wind makes her way eastwards. Such small coastal commercial sailing vessels remained trading into small harbours and ports around the coast well into the 20th Century.
