This painting reflects the 'good old days' of the great side-winding' distant water trawlers from Hull and Grimsby. Sometimes large shoals of fish would congregate on certain grounds, leading to a scramble of ships to take advantage of the bounty. Aboard the foreground trawler they (the deckhands or 'deckies') under the mate are preparing to hoist aboard the 'cod-end' of the trawl net. The other trawler WILLIAM WILBERFORCE was a well-known ship, originally owned in Hull, but shown here under Grimsby registration.
