Built at Ardrossan in 1868 the Mary Stewart had the distinction of being the last engineless merchant sailing vessel on the British register. She worked up until the 1930s before being laid up at Scarinish on the isle of Tiree. The painting shows her passing between Rum and Eigg on the Scottish west coast.
