HMS Unicorn in Tor Bay, May 1800 - Oil on canvas by Geoff Hunt RSMA.
HMS Unicorn in Tor Bay, May 1800 - Oil on canvas by Geoff Hunt RSMA.
Unicorn, the fast, weatherly 28-gun Leda Class frigate sets off on detachment from the fleet anchored in Tor Bay. In the background, we see the Ville de Paris, Cornwallis's mighty 110-gun flagship (built at Chatham, and had nothing to do with France at all) which was anchored in Torbay with 24 sail of the line. “On the 18th, at 2 pm, the Unicorn sailed fresh breezes from the WNW” - Master's log, Ville de Paris.
An excellent example of Geoff's brilliant ability to capture the subtle light on the sea and sails, the buoyancy and movement of the ship. It's as if you are in a small boat within a short distance...
