Original painting in gouache and acrylic on board.
Image Size: 20 x 14 inches, signed lower right.
An ex-American War of 1812 prize, the Mohawk was originally built at the Norfolk Navy Yard as the cutter Ferret, but re-rigged as a brig in 1810 and renamed Viper, armed with 10 guns. In an engagement with HMS Narsissus on January 17th 1813 she was captured and subsequently recommissioned as HMS Mohawk seeing continuing action in the Potomac River area under its commander Henry Litchfield. The Mohawk was later sold in 1814.
