HMS Acasta was tasked with aircraft carrier escort duty during the evacuation of Allied forces from Norway in 1940. On the 8th of June, whilst HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent were escorting the carrier HMS Glorious back to Scapa Flow, the trio of ships were spotted by Scharnhorst and Gneisnau which tracked them and launched an attack on HMS Glorious.
When the Glorious had been hit several times and had begun to list, HMS Acasta, which had been laying a smokescreen with HMS Ardent, turned to fight the battleships. Whilst she managed to damage the Scharnhorst, Acasta was hit and subsequently sunk with few survivors.
