Continental Army schooners raiding British supply ships off Cape Cod, March 1776

This image depicts schooners leased by the Continental Army, several only 60 feet long and armed with small cannon. Manned by sea-minded soldiers, these schooners attacked British supply ships off Boston and even captured a longed-for powder ship. Their career lasted until 1777 when, with the help of the French fleet, the Continental Navy was created and larger ships could finally head out to sea.
