Here, the Royal Sovereign, under a vast cloud of sail which was shortly to be dropped or shot away, has just come under fire from the Santa Ana and the Fougeux, while she herself has just fired a forward gun to create a cloud of smoke which, drifting down ahead, was intended to obscure the view of the enemy gunners. Belleisle is seen to the left. Out to the right, and about two miles away, Nelson's flagship Victory leads the windward line, but it would be another forty minutes before they too got into action
