This tremendous painting captures a moment in the lead-up to the Atlantic Chase of  Admiral Villeneuve and subsequently to the Battle of Trafalgar... 

The French fleet had broken out of the Toulon blockade in stormy weather. Two British frigates, Active and Seahorse, spotted this move and raced the two-hundred-odd miles to warn Nelson, whose main fleet was moored in the Maddalena anchorage, Sardinia. There was a 'heavy NW gale' and the frigates carried all sail they possibly could as they ran ahead of the storm....
