Duchess Of Montrose; Perfect Evening - Rob Andrew
One of Glasgow's long-gone beautiful steamers on the Firth of Clyde.
A turbine steamer built by Wm Denny & Bros Ltd, Dumbarto, launched 10th May 1930. In the days of Sunday restrictions on alcohol sales, trips “doon the water” on the Firth Of Clyde were a popular way to access a drink as travelers were exempt from the worst of those restrictions. Pre-war she cruised in the lower Firth to Arran, Ayr, and as far as Stranraer. She remained on the Clyde through WWI then went back to cruising as far as Inveraray. Withdrawn after the 1964 season, finally leaving the Clyde in September 1965 to be scrapped at Ghent.
This painting raised a nice sum for CHAS, the Children's Hospice Association Scotland.
