The Bristol Channel circa 1860 and traffic off the North Devon coast is taking advantage of an ebb tide and an Easterly breeze.

The two-masted schooner is typical of the period with single topsail and topgallant.  Her heading indicates that she is on passage from lfracombe to Milford Haven and two of her crew of five are hardening in the headsail sheets.  Passing astern of her is a wooden three-mast full rigger.
