The USS Constitution is seen making its way to its home port of Boston on 30th August 1812 after her successful engagement with the British frigate HMS Guerriere (Captain James Dacres). In the engagement Constitution’s sails were much damaged, requiring patching at sea to maintain speed, but with a British shot to her hull largely bouncing off, it earned her the nickname ‘Old Ironsides’.

The ship still exists and is maintained in seaworthy condition, the oldest such ship still afloat. Still a fully commissioned US Navy ship, Constitution is normally berthed at Pier 1 of the former Charlestown Navy Yard.
