HMS Arethusa was a 38-gun Minerva-class fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy built at Bristol in 1781.
A "beam reach" is a point of sail where a ship travels perpendicular (90 degrees) to the wind, with the wind blowing directly across the side of the boat. It is considered one of the fastest and most efficient points of sail, offering an optimal balance between stability and speed.
