Yachtsmen who regularly race on the Solent will know the North shore is favoured when beating against a strong South Westerly breeze and an income spring tide.
When the ‘Big Class’ of the 1930s were racing, then as now, extra care had to be taken with deep draught hulls as their navigators take tactical advantage of the shoaling depths slowing the opposing current. The powerful schooner, ‘Westward’ has the advantage over George V’s ‘Britannia’ as she is to windward and may be able to lay the windward mark at the Western end of the Solent without another tack inshore.
Although ‘Britannia’ was the oldest yacht in this race, built in 1893, she was still very successfully raced against much younger rivals as George V continually modified her rig and hull to keep up with the latest ‘technology’ of the time
