In June 1782, HMS Fortitude lay in Torbay.

Captain’s log records:-
“On 4th sent 40 men to hospital, cleaned decks and received fresh beef.  People involved in working up junk”.
“Working up junk” in the Royal Navy meant preparing and using old ropes for various tasks on board a ship, “junk” referred to old ropes that were no longer strong enough for their original purpose but were still useful for other applications.  Rope fibres (junk) were used in various ways - forced into seams between planks, matting, hammock stays, mop heads or stops etc.
