Venturing Offshore - Jenny Morgan RSMA

During the late 1900's and later when the Big J Class yachts were racing in the Solent and other waters around the coast, a growing band of adventurous amateur yachtsmen were venturing out on short cruises in their own smaller private yachts.

The painting depicts several of these yachts, typifying the designs of that era, the nearest yacht being a much favoured 'yawl' rig, which made for easier sail-handling with smaller crews, often comprised of friends, and perhaps one 'paid' professional hand.
