This large engraving is after the famous painting by Arthur William Devis in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London. Devis was in prison for debt at the time of Trafalgar but was able to secure his release so that he could paint this picture and pay his creditors from the proceeds. Travelling to Portsmouth, he spent three weeks on "Victory" making drawings of the ship's company and the cockpit itself. He was able to make studies for the portrait of Nelson from the body when the autopsy was carried out. This image is therefore as accurate as possible.
It is interesting to note that the "Death of Nelson" engraving correctly shows the place where Nelson died - as per the painting - but that the wrong spot has been marked in HMS Victory all these years!
This restrike engraving was made contemporaneously from the original engraving plate and printed on an original period printing press. It was then carefully hand-coloured with water colour.
Plate size 19 x 24 inches.
