One of sailing’s most competitive International team events was the biannual Admirals Cup. In this regatta, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club since 1985, teams from as far away as New Zealand and Australia competed against up to seventeen other counties.
Competition for the Admirals Cup promoted the development of fast, seaworthy racing yachts. During the regatta, highly skilled crews, many of whom were professionals, enjoyed tough, challenging, close inshore racing on the Solent, off Cowes, which concluded with, arguably, one of the toughest ocean races of all, the 605 mile RORC’s Fastnet Race. The last Admirals Cup Regatta was held in 2005
