In the 1901 America's Cup Series Sir Thomas Lipton's yacht Shamrock II raced against the American yacht Columbia under the New York Yacht Club. This painting shows the two yachts commencing on a windward 15 mile outward leg of the race which proved a close run thing, but in the final the Columbia crossed the finishing line 3 minutes and 27 seconds before the Shamrock.
