Montague Dawson was fascinated by the towering grace of the mid-19th Century clipper ships which inspired some of his most celebrated works. This painting refers to the tea race between Taeping and Ariel which were two of the most famous tea clippers. Taeping was designed by William Steele and built at Greenock on the Clyde. Ariel also came from the same yard and was slightly larger than Taeping, but she proved to be extraordinarily fast. The clippers finished loading their cargo at Foochow towards the end of May and Dawson has here depicted a classic view as they hurtle up the Channel with all sails set on the final day of the race.
