Bonaparte unfortunately had already disembarked his land forces to attack Egypt but the crews of the ships were still not quite prepared for the battle as many were still ashore collecting water and supplies. They clearly did not expect Nelson to attack straight away. The ships however, had been anchored in such a manner as to make use of the local shoal waters believing this would force Nelson to attack from only the seaward side. So confident that this strategy would work they did not prepare the land side armament.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn approach Nelson was informed that the French ships had only been anchored by the head and not bow and stern, allowing them to swing on their anchor with a wind change without striking the shallow water. This was their fatal error because if they had room to swing this would mean that there would be enough room inshore for the British ships to sail between them and the shoal water. Nelson then split his fleet in to two and half went inshore and half attacked the seaward side staring from the windward end. This strategy enabled Nelson’s fleet to attack both sides of each ship individually from both sides at the same time and as they attacked from the windward end none of the French fleet would be able to quickly sail up against the wind to offer any support as they were all anchored.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe windward end of the French fleet was destroyed pretty quickly; the night wore on with savage intensity until around 3am when the French flagship, \u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(43, 0, 255);\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOrient\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e violently exploded with massive loss of Life.
